Preschool

Preschool activities are available in nine municipal preschools, one parent co-operative day care center and one preschool run co-operatively by the staff. Together these centres take care of about 500 children in Torsby Municipality between the ages of 1-5 years.

Children of unemployed parents and those with a parent at home for the care of a younger sibling are entitled to receive 15 hours of preschool activity per week free of charge. All children aged 4–5 years are entitled to receive at least 525 hours of activity per year. We apply the maximum-fee principle.

Primary school

There are seven primary schools in Torsby Municipality. Together these schools offer eduction to children aged between about 6 to 15 years, from preschool class until class 9. School attendance is compulsory in Sweden from the autumn term in the year in which the child reaches the age of 6.

Primary schools also offer day recreation before and after school hours, school meals, health care and music or dance lessons.

Mother tongue education

Children who speak another language than Swedish at home can often follow lessons in this language at school. At this moment Torsby Municipality offers mother tongue education in the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • Dari
  • Dutch
  • German
  • Polish
  • Turkish

When at least five children in the municipality wish to receive education in a certain mother tongue, the municipality is required by law to look for a suitable teacher. For the official minority languages Romani chib, Finnish, Sami, Jiddish and Meänkieli only one child is required. The school principal will ultimately decide upon the education offered.

Children receive mother tongue education during one hour per week. Lessons take place at school, within or outside school hours.

Please contact your school if you wish to apply for mother tongue education.

School of Arts

The School of Arts (kulturskolan) Opens in new window., provides instruction in musical instruments, choir, dance, orchestra and drama. It also carries out cultural projects in schools. Instruction in these programmes is offered in schools throughout the municipality and at the School of Arts itself, which is located near the Frykenskolan in the town centre. About 350 students participate yearly in the activities of the Kulturskolan.

You can apply for a course at the School of Arts by filling out the application form ("anmälan") via our e-service or by sending it to kulturskolan@edu.torsby.se.
